Learn to ask the right questions
Recognise that some types of questioning are more helpful than others.
For example, “What options are available to us right now?” is going to generate far more possibilities than, “Do you think we should cut the budget or sack the agency?”
The clue is in the opening word…. who, what, where, when, and how. Go carefully with ‘why’ as it has a tendency to put people on the defensive.
The more skilful you become in posing powerful questions, the more likely you will be to receive a constructive, helpful and intelligent response.
At last you may discover you don’t need to have all the answers. Just remember to park that ego!
And that concludes this week's series of Quick Tips.
In summary,
Listening is a skill that many of us have yet to harness, and yet when we are not listening we are not learning.
When we are not listening, we are preventing new opportunities from emerging.
Whether you are a CEO or a team leader, you can learn to listen and connect with others in a way that will create opportunity and have a multiplier effect on your collective performance.
Isn’t it time that you and your team members felt and behaved like valued and valuable members of your organisation?
