Develop a Genuine Interest in People

This is different from sticking your nose in their personal lives or watching over their shoulder constantly.

Make it safe for people to reveal their true selves around you.

Ask them what they enjoy. Find out about their personal goals and dreams. Invite their opinions and ideas. 

Then use this information to realign roles and functions. Empower people to use their natural talents and skills and you are likely to discover a parallel uplift in motivation and performance.
